Wakefield Sports Med is a specialist facility providing rehabilitation of acute and chronic sports injuries, and sports induced medical problems. We also provide specialist treatment for performing artists from the dance and music community.
The facility includes specialist Orthopaedic Surgeons, Sports Physicians, Physiotherapists, Exercise Therapists, Podiatrists, Acupuncturists and Psychologists.

Dr Ruth Highet - MBChB, Dip Sports Med(London), FACSP(Aust) FACSM(USA)

Dr Highet set up Wellington's first comprehensive sports medicine clinic at Wakefield and was the first New Zealand woman to obtain her fellowship in Sports Medicine in 1993. Ruth is an athlete in her own right and has competed in Triathlons for NZ at the 1990 Commonwealth Games and World Triathlon Championships.
She has also completed 10 Marathons and several half iron man races.
Orthopaedic Consultants
Mr Chris Hoffman - MBChB, FRACS, Dip Clin Epi, Spinal Surgeon
Chris Hoffman is a fellowship trained Spinal and Orthopaedic Surgeon who completed his post
graduate fellowship training in Toronto, Canada. He has a special interest in evidence based
rehabilitation programmes and surgical intervention for back complaints. He runs a busy orthopaedic
practice on Mana Esplanade and is a Director, Consultant and Surgeon for the Wakefield Back
Institute.
Mr Peter Welsh - MB ChB, FRCSC, FACS, Dip ABOS, Surgeon
Peter Welsh has spent 20 years practising orthopaedics in Canada. He was Chief of Staff at the Orthopaedic and Arthritic Hospital and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He now runs a busy orthopaedic practice from Wakefield Specialist Medical Centre and is a Director, Consultant and Surgeon for the Wakefield Back Institute.
Mr Tim Gregg - MBChB, FRACS, Surgeon
Tim is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and a member of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association. He qualified FRACS(Ortho) in 2000 and spent 6 months in sports orthopaedic fellowship at the Adidas Sports Clinic in Auckland, followed by a one year fellowship in paediatric orthopaedics in Portland Oregon, USA. He is currently a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Wellington Hospital and Wakefield Sports Med. Tim has a particular interest in sports related orthopaedic surgery.
Mr Grant Kiddle - MBChB, FRACS, Surgeon
Orthopaedic surgeon, qualified with RACS(ortho) in 1996. Subsequently he spent one year as a
shoulder fellow at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and six months at Prince of Wales
Hospital in Sydney as a fellow in knee surgery.
Grant is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at
Wakefield Sports Medicine Clinic, Wellington Hospital and Bowen Hospital. His current professional
interests are knee / shoulder and sports related orthopaedic problems.
Podiatrist
Kim Tottenham - BHSc(Podiatry), PGrad Dip(Podiatry)UK, R.Pod
Kim has recently returned from overseas on a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.
She
spent two years doing post graduate studies in Podiatry at the University College of Northampton,
(UCN) in England. This is the only teaching school in the UK and Europe that has aid projects with
underdeveloped countries.
The papers completed were "The Foot in Diabetes", "Clinical
Rheumatology", "Applied Orthopaedics", "Hospital and Laboratory Tests", "Research Methods in
Healthcare" and "Ways of Knowing".
She was also working with the coordinator of a charity organisation, Foot Care International
(FCI) which implements aid projects in Eastern European countries. Together they brought medical
personnel from the Ukraine to Northampton for training in diabetes foot education, and also
fundraising for medical supplies. One of the aims was to decrease the burden of disease and death
caused by diabetes foot complications.
Kim has also worked briefly in Tonga and has traveled
extensively throughout Asia and Europe, working in Australia, Pakistan and England. She is a keen
sportswoman and has completed a number of marathons and triathlons.

Chris has 13 years experience in the physiotherapy field. He has completed post graduate
qualifications in manipulative physiotherapy in Perth, Australia.
He has a special interest
in manual therapy, sports related spinal pain and sports team physiotherapy.
Derek Young - B.H.Sc.(Physio), Post Grad. Dip Manip Th.
Derek has completed post graduate studies in manipulative physiotherapy.
He has
experience and expertise in treating acute and chronic back and neck pain. Derek's specialist
interest is in movement analysis and motor control.
Michelle Hayward - BPhEd, BHSc (Physio), MNZSP

Physiotherapist for Capital Shakers Netball team
Michelle's special interest in sports
injuries and rehabilitation has come from completing a Physical Education degree in Otago and a
Physiotherapy degree in Auckland. She has worked as a fitness instructor in a gym for many years.
Michelle has worked with many representative sports teams and athletes, both clinically and
on the sports field. She is currently the Physiotherapist for the Capital Shakers and has been with
the Wakefield team since October 2002.
Linda Lee - Bphyty., MNZSP

Linda
graduated from Otago in 1995, and has over 7 years experience in private practice. Linda has worked
in New Zealand and spent two and a half years in the UK in both the public and private sector. Linda
has a special interest in working with muscle balance clients and joined our Wakefield team in
December 2001. She is the physiotherapist for the Wellington Women's Hockey team.
Kinesiologists
Katie Low - BSc Kin
- Exercise Therapist
Katie completed her degree in 2001 and spent time in Victoria,
Canada working within the Canadian Back Institute. Katie specializes in developing individual
rehabilitation programs with a focus on functional strengthening. Katie has completed training in
Canada to perform functional and vocational abiltity assessments.
Adam Cornett - BSc Kin
- Exercise Therapist
Adam has experience with the rehabilitation of occupational injuries in Canada with Summit
Injury Management Inc., and the Canadian Back Institute. This has included functional assessments,
rehabilitation programming, and return to work planning for patients.
He has also had
experience training athletes through EDGE - Enhanced Performance Specialist in Canada. This has
involved assessment, developing and implementing training programs for athletes ranging from 12 yrs
to professional level in sports including ice-hockey, soccer, rugby, golf, squash and tennis.
Adam is presently involved in a Canadian study on the effects of various warm-up protocols in
ice-hockey performance, as well as developing a training program for agility and acceleration in
ice-hockey.
Massage Therapist
Nin Roberts
Nin completed her studies in Massage Therapy from the New Zealand College of Massage in 2001.
Nin specialises in deep tissue and sports massage and has looked after members of a number of New
Zealand sporting teams including the All Blacks, Silver Ferns, New Zealand Sevens' team, Wellington
Lions, Hurricanes and the English Indoor Cricket team.
She is a sports woman herself and is
in her third season playing for the New Zealand Women's Hockey Team ( The Black Sticks) and
currently holds 54 test caps.
