Nursing at Wakefield

Julia Catsburg

Director of Nursing

"Welcome to the web pages for Nursing at Wakefield Hospital. It is my pleasure to offer you a glimpse of what our nursing staff have accomplished.

Wakefield Hospital management truly believe that staff are our greatest asset. I invite you to see why.

I have worked at Wakefield for 19 years, in both bedside and management roles. As Director of Nursing I'd like to inform you of our professional environment.

We believe in the importance of collaboration to ensure best practice and a safe working environment. In all clinical areas at Wakefield Hospital, nurses are involved in preceptoring and teaching, as well as committees for Occupational Health and Safety and Infection Control. We encourage nurses to follow their clinical interests and undertake quality improvements.

Our Recognition Pathway is a system that gives nurses high quality feedback through the annual appraisal and portfolio update. As the Nursing Council has recognised the Pathway as an Accredited professional development and recognition programme, your participation in it covers annual practising certificate requirements. The Pathway also encourages and rewards nurses in developing their clinical expertise and involvement in Wakefield's commitment to excellence in caring.

We are committed to ongoing education and professional development - our staff are entitled to five paid study days per year to ensure that they can maintain and develop their clinical and nursing skills. Our in-house training programme includes a Comprehensive orientation programme, area-specific study days and a weekly lunch-time lecture series in which consultants and allied health staff share their knowledge and expertise.

We support nurses' involvement in further formal study and externally provide education events such as conferences. We have a special relationship with the Postgraduate certificate in peri-operative nursing run jointly by Whitireia Community Polytechnic and Medtra. Wakefield Hospital was the third partner in the consortium who set up this course, and we have supported 30 of our nurses in completing it. I know that it's a wonderful way to deepen your knowledge of planned surgery and care of patients because I did it myself."
