Team Leader, CardiothoracicThere are 25 cardiothoracic sessions available each month, the main procedures are cardiac related and include: CABG (on pump and off pump), aortic and mitral valve replacement, re-do bypass surgery. Less frequently there are Maze procedures (ablation of pathways for Atrial Fibrillation), mitral valve repairs, aortic root replacements, pericardectomy and repairs of atrial septal defects, coarctation of aorta and ventricular aneursyms. Acute work covers return to surgery, and admissions from Cath Lab for CABG in acute left main stem occlusion. Thoracic procedures include bronchoscopy, videoscopic lung biopsies, frozen sections, mediastinoscopies and mediastinotomies, lung volume reductions, thoracotomies, lobectomies, thymectomies, pleurodesis, pneumonectomies, rib resections, xiphisternum excision, repair of diaphragm and pectus excavatum, and removal of sternal wires. We also do thoracic sympathectomies and videoscopic cervical sympathectomies. We have a wonderful working environment with an excellent team – surgeons, registrars, nurses, anaesthetic technicians and perfusionists. Assisting with cardiac surgery is interesting and educational.
