Charge Nurse - ICU / HDU

Our windows look out on the garden - it's a nice environment and a relaxed atmosphere. We have 24 hour visiting and that means there's opportunity to build relationships with our patients, their families and friends.

There is quite a lot of variation in the surgery even though it is elective. While the work is very consistent, our expertise is called on for medical emergencies in the hospital.

Our well-equipped five bed adult unit admits patients who have undergone cardiac, neuro and general surgery, as well as emergency admissions from within the hospital. There are three ICU beds with ventilator capacity and two HDU beds.

About 80% of our patients are ventilated and generally here for a two day stay.

Staffing: The ICU working week is usually from Monday to Friday. There is little requirement for weekend work so we run an on-call roster system. We follow an eight or twelve hour shift pattern across 24 hours. Rosters are planned to accommodate the needs of our staff and the service we provide - we are able to be very flexible in terms of the shifts.
